Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future

Work has begun on our new project Archiving the Past, Reflecting the Future, which will focus on Black British history, particularly around the contribution to the arts in the UK. It will look at the history of the Black communities in Leicester, the development of a Black British arts scene, and will offer a focus on the history of Black Dance.

We are currently working to create a comprehensive Black history archive that reflects international, national and local contributions. It will be digitally available, and open up full access to existing Black history archives, research new strands and individuals who made an important impact in the arts, and make links to national archives, including the Black Cultural Archives in London. The archive will also support academic research by the contemporary dance world, as a hub for information on the history and specific choreography of Black Dance.

We will be officially launching the project at De Montfort University’s Cultural Exchanges on the 26 February 2019 with a BlackChat event with the Peoples Champion and former professional Boxer Michael Watson MBE
